A theoretical analysis of the literature on the problem of media competence is performed. The results of experimental work are provided. 300 students of pedagogical specialities and directions of training of the Federal State Budget Educa- tional Institution of Higher Professional Education “ISLU” form the research base. The purpose is diagnosing the initial state of media competence of individual students of pedagogical specialities. Objectives: 1) determining the presence / absence of the basic indicators of media competence component formation; 2) identification of students' activity during media productive creative activity as a stimulator of desired quality manifestation. A diagnostic program consisted of the author's questionnaire and an instruction- map for a teacher. The undertaken study allowed to make a conclusion that the level of students’ media competence is formed on the basis of organizational and pedagogical conditions of the edu- cational process at the university.

The article is devoted to the interaction of legal and moral development of media technologies in the context of geographical education. The article summarizes the experience of the theoretical analysis of mediatization in geographic education, the legal and moral aspects of the disorders and ways of their prevention and correction in the process of educational interaction between teacher and student, between student and teacher, mediated mediatechnologies. It is noted that geographical education in the modern world is education, which is closely associated with the use of media technologies. In other types of education the role of media technologies in improving the quality of education is less obvious, in the field of teaching and learning geography, it speaks very clearly. Therefore, the problems associated with its mediatization, are very important and their solution is particularly compelling. These issues are primarily associated with actively flowing social, economic, political and ideological crisis in many communities and countries of the Earth. Many of them as in the “mirror” are reflected in the sphere of high technologies, including media technologies. The article provides guidance and direction to the correction of violations at the individual and social levels.

For sexual health organisations, establishing a safe space to talk about sensitive topics is an important prerequisite for information exchange and open dialogue. With the popularity of social media and mobile phones, these safe spaces are moving online. This article examines one of these spaces, the Love Matters Kenya Facebook page, as an example of a sexual health organisation using social media to discuss sexuality with young people. We observed interactions on the Facebook page over a period of six weeks, and also led an online focus group discussion. The results showed that the key elements of a safe space are: good moderation; users’ ability to create their own online personas; and a community atmosphere that enables trust and social relationships to grow.

Using space technologies and activities for outreach activities, education and training purposes have been developed in France since the creation of CNES in 1962, with one main partner: Planete Sciences. Beyond the development of technological activities and projects (experimental rockets, satellites, and stratospheric balloons), the increasing interest for space applications and services in the daily life (GMES and environment, Galileo, Climate Change, etc.) adds a new dimension to outreach activities. In this context, the social networks have become essential components of the communication on Internet. Acknowledging that the development of social media is a disruption in communication, CNES and Planete Sciences Midi-Pyrenees have integrated these tools in their outreach strategy and experiment what can be done in the space sector with these new tools and evaluate their potential benefits and specific role: blogs and social networks (such as Facebook and Twitter) can be considered as a "market place", in order to target a new audience, in particular young people. Focusing on earth observation and attractive education tools, Planete Sciences Midi-Pyrenees created the blog "Un autre regard sur la Terre" in 2010. CNES included the social networks in its communication strategy since 2008. 4 years of experience allow a first evaluation of the results and the impact. The two complementary approaches show that social media provides a very powerful support for communication and outreach activities during the major space events but can also enable in-depth and educative activities. The powerful dimension of the image is a very strong factor. One main challenge is to go beyond the event itself and to disseminate background messages or in-depth information, with the objective to transform the initial interest raised by social media in a long lasting curiosity or in an involvement in other type of activities, including the practice of hands-on activities by teachers in the classroom. Additional issues and risks related to the use of social media have been identified. 1.1 The fact that a longer experience is needed in order to perform a more comprehensive evaluation. 1.2 The issue of the "reaction speed" and the control of the value of the information by professional organisations. 1.3 The issues raised by the use of social networks by employees. 1.4 The management of the e-reputation. A last recommendation is related to the resources and manpower needed to animate, drive and develop an online community and manage the social media. This activity requires also a very good knowledge of space activities and shall involve skilled people and experts.

Interactive media and virtual environments give rise to transmedia and multiscreen viewing in a new popular and participatory culture. This in turn requires a new type of critical, reflective media education. This article reviews expert opinions on the educational potential of The Hunger Games (THG) and the use of Twitter during the viewing of films by young audiences. The study has the twofold goal of analysing whether the tweets include the topics of ideology and values mentioned in the selected articles and whether the conversations help build knowledge of the subjects that, according to the experts, are discussed in the literary trilogy. The method, based on discourse analysis, is twofold as well, comprising, on one hand, the discussion of 61 selected academic papers on THG and, on the other, 6000 tweets posted by youngsters while watching the films in the trilogy shown on TV. The tweets were analysed using the 'coding and counting' technique in computer-mediated discourse analysis. The results show a great chasm between academic or educational perspectives and what youngsters see in the films. Twitter interactions show that the virtual environments where these interactions take place are mere virtual concourses rather than affinity or learning spaces. This draws attention to the need for a new type of media education which not only includes the popular culture in formal education environments, but also uses the virtual concourses where youngsters gather around media products to transform mere coexistence into convergence of interests based on the meaning of these products.

Web 2.0 tools have gained strategic importance in personal, social and educational contexts. In this study, we analysed the use made by 757 Spanish students of 10 Web 2.0 tools, namely wikis, blogs, Moodle, Google Docs, Google Reader, Google Maps, Skype, Flickr, YouTube and general or personal social networks. To this end, we administered an online questionnaire, the HEWE2.0, designed using the Google Docs application, to explore five questions: (ⅰ) what information, knowledge and training the subjects had, (ⅱ) how they used the tools: difficulty, preference and satisfaction, (ⅲ) when and where they used them, (ⅳ) why they had begun to use them, and (ⅴ) what they used them for. We performed two types of analysis, one descriptive and the other multivariate, using the General Linear Model. The results show specific patterns of response according to sex, educational level and age. We found that female subjects showed a greater preference for social tools than males, who preferred instrumental tools; that the higher the subjects' educational level, the more information they possessed about Web 2.0 tools; and that functional knowledge about those tools requiring greater digital competence increased with age and vice versa. The implications of these results are discussed and evaluated.

The website Reddit has received scant attention from educational researchers despite the presence of numerous teaching-related subreddits that host thousands of threaded conversations. The purpose of this study was to provide an initial comparison of discussions occurring in several different affinity spaces on Reddit. Because of the lack of relevant prior research, there was no baseline for what to expect in Reddit discussions, so all posts and responses in four different teaching-related subreddits over the course of a full year were analyzed to answer three research questions: How much did individuals contribute to different subreddits? What content interactions occurred in different subreddits? What social interactions occurred in different subreddits? Comparative quantitative analysis revealed substantial differences among the subreddits in terms of levels of voting and network characteristics. Results suggest that Reddit hosts diverse spaces that could present benefits and challenges for educators. These findings are addressed in relation to the extant literature and implications for educational practice and future research.

The rapid development of mobile technology have proliferated new media to most aspects of our daily life. This new way of consuming and creating information is in particular attractive to youths as a platform and space for activities not passible in the face-to-face context. This highlights the importance for educators and policy makers to understand where our youths are in terms of their capabilities to participate in the new media ecology. This capability can be conceptualized as new media literacy (NML) that has been theorized into four quadrants with ten fine-tuned indicators. However, existing instruments have yet to explore the prosuming aspect of NML. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop an instrument to measure youth's NML. This paper reports the development and validation of this instrument. This instrument can be used for further studies, contributing to theory building of NML and assessing students' NML for informing practice in schools. Data were collected from 574 Singapore students range from grade 4 to grade 11 (age 10-17). Results suggest that the instrument is reliable and valid. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Social networking sites (SNS) have been used to support educational and professional endeavors. However, little research has been done to understand the relationship between educator identity and participation in SNS or to examine the implications that institutional regulation of such media may have upon educator identity. Using grounded theory, in this study we developed a framework for understanding how a group of teacher education students viewed their developing identities within social networking sites as they began the life transition to becoming educators. The theory that emerged from this study proposes that educator identity consists of a constellation of interconnected acceptable identity fragments, which are each intentional, authentic, transitional, necessarily incomplete, and socially-constructed and -responsive. This view of educator identity contrasts sharply with previous views of identity by highlighting the complicated, negotiated, and recursive relationship that exists between educator participation in SNS and educator identity. Additionally, this perspective suggests that educator participation in SNS is neither fully representative of authentic identity (as prominent SNS models imply) nor dramaturgical. These findings yield important implications for educators, researchers, educational institutions, lawmakers, and SNS developers alike, because they lead to a more sophisticated understanding of identity and online participation that is essential for developing mechanisms to support moral and legal judgments, professionalism, and social interactions relative to SNS.

This paper presents a description and evaluation of Myartspace, a service on mobile phones for inquiry-led learning that allows students to gather information during a school field trip which is automatically sent to a website where they can view, share and present it, back in the classroom or at home.
The evaluation focused on three levels: a micro level, concerned with issues of usability; a meso level, which examined educational effectiveness in terms of learning breakthroughs and breakdowns; and a macro level, which looked at the impact of the new technology on school museum visits practice. Issues of implementing mobile learning across school and museum settings are identified and cross-level influences are discussed.
The study showed that the service was effective in enabling students to gather information in a museum and this provided resources for effective construction and reflection in the classroom. Minor usability problems did not detract from the learning, however there are significant issues concerning how to structure the visit and on the viability of Myartspace as a regular service.
